Lice or Pediculosis on Your Child
Primarily this is, above all, for most mothers, who are the ones that usually are responsible for the cleanliness and hygiene of children. Schools and nurseries are the main sources of infection, but the truth is that children can be infested at any place, such as parks, playgrounds or at home of a relative.
What are lice?
There are three types of lice: the head (Pediculus humanus capitis), the body (Pediculus humanus corporis) or the pubis (pubic phithirus).
Head lice are a parasite that lives only in the human scalp, and outside it do not survive more than two or three days. Head lice are not related to poor hygiene, or present a hazard to health, but cause intense itching and spread quickly.
The lice infestation is not related to poor hygiene in children
The lice feed on blood obtained through the human scalp where they deposit a liquid that causes itching. Each louse can be 2 to 3 mm. They are dark gray and have no wings. Nor jump, but crawl.
These parasites reproduce by laying eggs (the famous nits), translucent, whitish or light brown, which are deposited near the hairline. When we found more than 6 cm from the root, there are no parasites. The nits are attached to hair by a sticky substance that is not removed with simple brushing.
The female lice can reach up to three hundred eggs over her life about three weeks, which become lice within six to nine days.
The most common places to find the nits are behind the ears and neck area. Although easier to see than lice because they do not move, examine with patience every strand of hair and avoid direct sunlight.
Do not confuse with dandruff, because unlike the latter, the nits are glued to the hair.
